Item of the Week: Hot or Not

Thursday, January 14, 2010

We know, we know, you've never been to this website, neither have we.  But if you're on the internet you know someone who has used HotOrNot.com either out of pure personal vanity or from the safe distance of cultural analysis.

Whatever your persuasion, everything comes together to make a beautiful book when Amsterdam based publisher KesselsKramer invites a group of students from the Rietveld Academy of Art to determine the burning question for themselves, are they Hot or Not? You might even spot that special someone...

Item of the Week: Scattered Light

Thursday, January 07, 2010

Scattered light is a so much more than a smart poster set.

A conceptual newspaper and call to action, ASDF (Mylinh Nguyen & David Horvitz) combine appropriated text from the likes of John Berger and Rebecca Solnit with some beautifully naturalistic snaps. Who doesn't like having a bit of John Berger on their wall?

Commissioned by top-notch Minneapolis studio RO-LU.

Linking Thoughtfully with Robin Cameron

Friday, December 18, 2009

Robin Cameron is a Canadian artist living in New York, she is a prolific self-publisher with 11+ titles to her name. Robin showed at Golden Age in April and we co-published a book with her called Mind Maps

1. Some youtube watching: The film Mon Oncle changed how I viewed modernism when my Critical Studies teacher screened it in class.

2. Before he became what we know of Jim Henson he made Time Piece, you can see his abstract notions and allusions to his playful experimentation.

3. This is a home spun video from friends Charlie Roberts and Heidi Johansen who live in Norway cook a lot and make beautiful art.

4. Some very discerning links and very special found objects from two very discerning friends Gary Fogelson & Jacqueline Di Milia.

5. I think that Denise Despirito puts the best inspiration on her tumblr, its kind of like going on a spirit walk through the internets.

6. Here are a couple of Canadianisms, I just found Liam's work he's finishing up at OCAD and I really like his ephemeral assemblages and whittling.

7. If you haven't seen the Vancouver based Geoffrey Farmer's sculptures you really should because they are fantastic.

8. Jesse B. Harris is my favorite button-maker, word smith and typographer extraordinaire, he proves that punks not actually dead, it's alive & living in a basement in Toronto.

9. Shay Semple has a cynical way about him, but once you get past that you can trust how he posts his wanderings, musings and general opinions. He's a west-coast transplant living in Toronto.

10. The plague is a quiet apocalyptic death knell by Shayne Ehman who lives in the woods on an island in British Columbia with Zooey and their son Axel. Shayne is a comic book drawer, mushroom picker and silent dreamer, listen to some of his music.

11. A couple of Art Readings:

How David Hammons thinks of Art
is really a great trip. He doesn't need nobody but inevitably they end up needing him.

Sol Lewitt explains conceptual art. Kind of like his own manifesto of sorts.

10 Favorite Links with MARIA TROFIMOVA

Friday, December 11, 2009

Maria Trofimova lives and works in Geneva, Switzerland as a photographer.

1. I'm really into Tumblr, this bloggy tool for bookmarking images, links and texts. It's user-friendly and incredibly useful for discovering and archiving inspirational images. Some people even manage to create mini virtual display spaces, that become kind of curatorial propositions, http://alaskaneyes.tumblr.com, http://voodoovoodoo.tumblr.com/, or http://cosmic-dust.tumblr.com/, just to name a few.

2. Sang Bleu is an amazing arts, culture and fashion magazine I've contributed to.

3. A webzine about creative women, Way Of Women, showcasing the works of some interesting ladies in contemporary art, design and medias.

4. My friend Alexis Zavialoff's bookshop Motto. Great selection, in the finest of taste, if you happen to be in Kreuzberg, Berlin, it's definitely worse to check out.

5. Free internet manifesto, laser beams art, virtual rituals, and more in the intriguing world of the prolific visual artists Aids-3D.

6. ALAINFINKELKRAUTROCK, a french music blog that I like.

7. The best among the found-jpgs, WTF collections sites: http://www.as-found.net/.

8. Take a look at the collective Slavs & Tatars' work. Erudite and subtle.

9. TRIANGLE TRIANGLE: just photography, just nice.

10. Baby Raccoon in the tub = aaaaaaw
