Dye-ing to See Nick Relph @ Gavin Brown's Enterprise

Thursday, March 11, 2010

One of our faves, Nick Relph has his first solo show up at Gavin Brown's Enterprise.  The press release (available here) is an essay written by Relph that gives a compelling overview of the history of fabric dyeing and it's relation to color, film, luxury goods and real estate development.

The collages look great, check the show out in New York and online.

Also of note, we have just one copy left of this similarly rad monograph from Oliver Payne and Nick Relph's exhibition at the Serpentine gallery available here:

Craig Mod thinks about the future of books

Even though I read countless "pages" on my computer and phone, I've been hesitant to embrace the Kindle and iPad. As a book nerd, it's hard for me to imagine not having stacks of books on my desk, next to my bed, on the floor, and any other place where books can be stacked. In his essay, Mod suggests that those stacks won't leave, if anything he thinks they'll get better.

Of the books we do print — the books we make — they need rigor. They need to be books where the object is embraced as a canvas by designer, publisher and writer. This is the only way these books as physical objects will carry any meaning moving forward.

From one print lover to another, I urge you to read this essay. Books in the Age of the iPad, Craig Mod, March 2010

San Francisco: I Got 5 On it

Thursday, March 04, 2010

If you happen to be in San Francisco this Saturday, be sure to check out the opening of "I Got 5 On It" at 31 Rausch St. Gallery. The show features the responses of twenty talented photographers who were prompted with five subjects - a chair, a flower, a window, a tree and a road -  to convey through photos.

The exhibition is curated by SF based photographers Amanda Boe, Chris Koperski and Adam Weir. The event runs from 6-10 PM and looks promising!

What would it look like if a few famous modern artists painted their Luxury Automobiles and exotic pets?  Thanks to artist Jon Rafman we can see the results in all their high-res, 3d rendered glory. I'll take one ride in Rudolph Stingel's Esclade Limo, please.

Eggleston IRL

Sunday, February 28, 2010

This past Saturday marked the opening of William Eggleston: Democratic Camera, Photographs and Video, 1961-2008 at the Art Institute of Chicago, the artist's first retrospective in the US. Some of us were fortunate enough to catch a glimpse of the elusive Eggleston at a rare public book signing that afternoon. The lobby of the Modern Wing was swamped with giddy fans hugging copies of the catalogue or older issues of his books. He raised his head a few times during the hour and a half event, but generally remained silent while scrawling his name inside the books that were pushed down the table like an assembly line.

The expansive show occupies the two main galleries on the first floor of the Modern Wing, with some huge black and white portraits and a video installation spilling into the corridor outside of the photo gallery. The works within the galleries are mostly color Dye Transfer prints, a fairly ancient and complicated photographic printing process which results in a densely rich color quality that is Eggleston's signature. Viewing his work in real life is truly a perspective changing event. It remains obvious that he is one of the most influential contemporary photographers in the scene, defining what and how color photography is today.

The exhibition is on view at the Art Institute until May 23.

On a side note, we highly recommend the documentary William Eggleston in the Real World to supplement the genius of this enigma. Released in 2006, the movie shows an intimate look into the artist's life while offering some vulnerable and heart warming scenes of the guy.
