How to explain it to my parents?

Explaining my reasons for pursuing a career in art to my parents on a typical occasion reminds me that I do, indeed, have a sense of humor. I recently stumbled upon How to explain it to my parents? (via 01 Magazine), a documentary series by Dutch artists Lernert & Sander. In the series, nine abstract artists sit down with their parents for a conversation about their work. There are some really wonderful moments in each episode; it's all in all a great series. BTW, where my ladies at?

Work For Free Magazine: Issue Eight

"WORK FOR FREE is an online magazine that displays original work by creative people seeking an alternative outlet for their projects. Work featured in the magazine has either been commissioned for the issue or submitted by the artist, under the stipulation that it has not been exhibited elsewhere and that there is no monetary compensation. We make no profit from our publication, but offer support and encourage exposure and promotion for the people we work with, as they are active and compelling members of the creative work force. WORK FOR FREE believes in all the artists it features; that they are making the most interesting contributions to the visual and literary conversation, out of the goodness in their hearts and the passion of their actions."

The latest issue of Work For Free is curated by Israel Lund and features some real Grade A stuff. Here are a few of my favorites...

Lauren Anderson, Faux Weirdo, Opening September 10

__alt__Untitled (Smoke Bomb Drawing 2), Smoke bombs on paper, 2010

Lauren Anderson
Faux Weirdo
September 10 - October 22
Opening September 10, 6-9pm

In the tradition of found art and appropriation, Lauren Anderson expands the boundaries of authorship with her minimal reproductions of unconscious art. Using familiar forms she negotiates the gap between pavement and placement. She memorializes abandoned sculptures, celebrates the remnants of explosives and makes a spirit rock for the living room. Anderson doesn't refer, she reveres.

Do not miss Anderson's solo debut at Golden Age where will be presenting a series of smoke bomb drawings and abstract sculptures.

TTC Gallery presents "Papir"

"Through the years TCC Gallery has worked as a venue for self-published art, releases and zines from all over the world. By establishing TTC Books, the goal is to expand people’s awareness and knowledge about the possibilities of the media. The same thing goes for the art book festival ”PAPIR”, for which TTC has invited a collection of small publishing houses and artists, young and old, to give lectures on the self-published art book. Each night the lectures will be followed by a book release from TTC Books."

TTC in Denmark is commencing their new move with their first new project, "PAPIR", a launch for their publisher TTC Books. The "mini artbook festival" includes contributions from Michael Koslowski, Niels Lomholdt, Kasper Hesselbjerg, Jesper Fabricius, Christian Wind, JSBJ, Marten Damgaard, Asher Penn, Jimmy Limit , Lukasz Gorczyca & Michal Kaczynski, Kristoffer Holmegaard, Alexander Martinez, Piotr Lakomy and Honza Zamojski, Elk, Andrew Lindberg, Sylvester Hegner, Peter Larsen and Markus von Platen.
